Description
The effect of silicon (Si) and Calcium (Cao) on the physiological attributes and nutritional status of many plant species is investigated to elucidate how Ca and Si interact and what advantages are initiated by combining these two elements.
Calcium, as calcium pectate, plays a structural role and is responsible for holding cell walls together in plants. Hence, Ca deficiency hinders the formation of cell walls, resulting in deformed leaves that affect the dry matter content. Studies indicate that Ca deficiency in cabbage6, and broccoli1 causes oxidative stress at the molecular level because the plant loses cell defense signaling mechanisms responsible for eliminating the free radicals.
